Born in Switzerland in 1903, Frey worked briefly for Le Corbusier on his Villa Savoye at Poissy in 1929. Arriving in the U.S. in 1930, Frey became the first of Le Corbusier's students to build in this country.
The young architect started a long, prolific Palm Springs career in 1934 where he interpreted the International Style in glass, steel, fiberglass and aluminum to the unique topography, climate and light of the desert. Producing over 200 building designs, Frey's specialty was private residences. His innovative designs offered simple solutions to the problems of blending modern architecture with the environment. A no-frills approach and use of simple, durable materials became his signature style that reflected his fondness for economy of design.
