A significant San Diego artist and ceramist, Betty Newkirk studied at the Art Center in La Jolla with Mac McClain. Ms. Newkirk showed her work at Fine Arts Gallery-San Diego, Los Angeles County Museum, Oakland Art Museum, Long Beach Museum of Art, Pasadena Art Museum (California Design 8, 9 and 10), Saint Paul Gallery, and Wichita Art Association.

Betty Newkirk was a significant San Diego artist/ceramist who studied at the Art Center in La Jolla with Mac McClain. Along with Dorothy Moore Scott, Kay Thomas, Lily Stoddard, Ione Norton, Jean Balmer, Marvelle Stickney, Betty Willcoxson, Kay Chilton, and Carol Bradbury, Betty Newkirk was a charter member of the San Diego Potter’s Guild.

Among her successful showings was Newkirk’s inclusion in the 1963 show ‘Allied Craftsmen of San Diego/20 Japanese Artists’ at Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego. Other artists included in show include Jean Balmer, Amy Donaldson, James Gibbs, Jack Hopkins, Lawrence Hunter, Beatrice Levy, Martha Longenecker, Rhoda Lopez, Marg Loring, Malcolm McClain, Frank Papworth, Margaret Price, Barney Reid, David Stewart, Joan Thorburn, Kay Whitcomb, Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley.

Also key to her legacy is Newkirk’s inclusion in California Design 8,9 and 10 exhibitions.
