David Stewart

Arts & Crafts | 1930-2019

Painter, ceramist and educator David Stewart attended El Camino Junior College, San Diego State College and was a student of Marguerite Wildenhain's at Pond Farm prior to enjoying a successful career as an artist in San Diego County.

Educator, painter and ceramist David Stewart attended El Camino Junior College and graduated from San Diego State College in 1958. Serving as one of the original apprentices to Marguerite Wildenhain at Pond Farm artists colony (1959-1961), Stewart assisted her during Pond Farm summer workshops for many years (1962-1980).

"The first time I walked through the gate at Pond Farm, I sensed that there were invisible standards there-- precious secrets that were not treated secretly or preciously. I read from the master at Pond Farm words I had only read in books, ideas I firmly believe in but had never tried to live by. I saw the master living by these ideas. The integrity, simplicity, and beauty of this example have been a source of strength and inspiration to me," David Stewart later recalled.

Fiercely independent, and one of the very few San Diego potters to earn his living from his art, Mr. Stewart was a member of the Potters’ Guild in the early 1960′s; the Allied Craftsmen in the early 1970′s; and by the 1980s had a retail shop for 15 years at Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town.
