Edgar Leroy Huxley

Architect | 1929-1989

Until his premature death in a plane crash, Edgar Huxley enjoyed a career here as an architect, artist, illustrator and muralist.

Edgar Huxley grew up in Blackwell, Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma A&M College with a B.Arch. He lived and worked (‘operating an architectural firm’) in Los Angeles as early as 1953 and in Barstow by 1965. Huxley lived in San Diego from approximately 1966 to his death in 1989.

Huxley joined the AIA San Diego Chapter in 1963 and enjoyed a career here as an architect, artist, illustrator and muralist. Huxley designed several Nurserylands, Growin’ Grounds and Cooks Corner stores as well as hotels and casinos in Las Vegas. By 1975 his firm was Huxley, Clemons and Colbourn.

In 1977, Huxley served as president of the AIA San Diego Chapter. In 1979, Huxley and architect/writer Richard Saul Wurman (then dean of architecture at Cal Poly Pomona) launched the first of many annual gatherings in Monterey, for the California Council of the American Institute of Architects. This was the first West Coast conference to focus strictly on design.

For a time he practiced from 4408 Bayard Avenue in Pacific Beach. Among Huxley’s office alumni was Rick Peterson who would later be a founder of Cornerstone architecture in Richmond, Virginia.

Due in large part to his launch of this important annual gathering, Huxley was named an AIA Fellow in April 1989. Unfortunately, Huxley died in a plane crash on his way from Washington state to the induction ceremony in Cleveland.
