John Hartley was born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1915 and graduated from Yale in 1937. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked many years as an architectural photographer – including capturing much of architect Sim Bruce Richards’ built projects. He lived in Laguna Beach in a home designed by Richards in 1969 with his wife Elizabeth, whom he married in 1954, and their children.
