Kenneth Smith Wing Jr.

Architect | 1931

Kenneth Wing Sr. and Jr. were Long Beach based architects. We are still learning about projects they designed in San Diego County.

College Avenue Baptist

Kenneth S. Wing Sr. was born in Colorado Springs on January 22, 1901. In 1918, at the age of 17, Wing’s family moved to Long Beach where he attended Polytechnic High School. He secured his B.S. in Architecture from the University of Southern California in 1925 and worked for Meyer and Holler (where he was reportedly assigned to design the Chinese pagoda and do the preliminary sketches for one of the interior murals for the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles). He then worked as chief designer at Lincoln Mortgage and for the Los Angeles Times designing a weekly sketch of a floor plan of a home for their home section. Wing established Kenneth S. Wing, Architect in 1931. He joined the AIA Southern California Chapter in 1938 and was elected as an FAIA Fellow in 1953.

Kenneth Smith Wing Jr. was born in Long Beach in 1931 and earned his B. Arch. from the University of California in 1953. He joined his father’s firm in 1955 after serving in the US Army between 1953-55.

Kenneth S. Wing’s archive is housed at the Architecture and Design Collection of the University Museum, University of California, Santa Barbara.
