Raymond Arthur Jung
Architect | 1914 - 1997Jung, and his firm, Jung & Cloyes, produced an array of fantastic wood and glass architecture at mid-century.
Raymond Arthur Jung was born in Ellinwood, Kansas in 1914. After completing his BS in Architecture (in 1936) at Kansas University, Mr. Jung studied Urban Planning at the Cornell Graduate School in Architecture (between 1936-1937). According to his obituary, "Mr. Jung was an accomplished sculptor and entered the Rome Prize Sculpture Competition and won a year's scholarship at Cranbrook Academy of Design [ca. 1937]." Mr. Jung moved to Southern California in 1938 and then, with his bride, Doris, moved to Coronado in 1940. He worked for the Department of the Navy [U.S. Navy’s Public Works circa 1939-43)] during World War II.
Mr. Jung started his professional career as a draftsman in the Long Beach office of Kenneth S. Wing and then as a Designer for Walter C. See in San Diego. After establishing Raymond A. Jung, AIA (circa 1946-47) in Del Mar, he joined in partnership with Eugene H. Cloyes as Architects Jung & Cloyes, AIA in 1958.
By 1960, Jung served as the District Architect for the Del Mar Union School District and is credited for the designs of Earl Warren Junior High School (1954) in Solana Beach, Juniper School (1958) in Escondido, Oak Crest Junior High School (1956) in Encinitas, Rose School (1961) in Escondido, San Dieguito Academy & Oak Crest Middle School in Encinitas, and Skyline School (1961) in Solana Beach among his commercial and residential projects.
