Robert Bradt was born in Chicago on September 30, 1915 and graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a BS in architecture in 1939. One of his professors was reportedly Mies Van der Rohe.

Bradt went to work as an Architectural Designer for Holabird, Root & Burgee (1940-41) prior to his time with Skidmore Owings & Merrill (1942-43). He arrived in Coronado as a Naval lieutenant in 1943 and finished with the USNR in 1946. Following his service, Robert worked as the Staff Architect for the San Diego City Schools (1947-48). Ultimately, he launched Robert A. Bradt, AIA Architect in 1948 and later added Peter C. Woo as his Associate. According to his obituary, he designed “…Coronado homes, many churches and schools in San Diego, along with a number of buildings at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot and Camp Pendleton."

His civic service was impressive. Bradt served as Project Planner for the FPHA (1942-43), taught Design, Drafting, and Construction Materials for the University of Calif. Extension (1946-47), AIA San Diego (serving as the Chapter’s Treasurer in 1947 and VP in 1948), served as President of the Coronado Art Association (1950-51 and 1954-55 as its President), City of Coronado Board of Zoning (1954), City of Coronado, Strand Way Development Committee (1954), Coronado Rotary (starting in 1955), City of Coronado Board of Appeals (1958-59), Board of Zoning Adjustments (1959-60). His obituary offered, “He was on the board of directors for Coronado Hospital, was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, a past president of the Coronado Association, on the Coronado Board of Zoning Adjusters, president of the Navy League, and member of the American Arbitration Association.”

Mr. Bradt died on September 18, 2006 at age 89.
