William Frances Cody

Architect | 1916-1978

Shortly after graduating from USC, and working for Cliff May, William Cody moved to Palm Springs and built his first project: the Del Marcos Hotel in 1947. His career spanned a wide array of projects in the Coachella Valley, Phoenix, Palo Alto, and Havana. In San Diego, Cody partnered with Henry Hester between 1958-60.

William Cody was born in 1916 in Dayton, Ohio. During his education at USC he seized on the opportunity to work with architect Cliff May. Following his graduation, Cody moved to Palm Springs where he designed projects in the Coachella Valley including the Eldorado and Tamarisk Country Clubs, Spa Bathhouse and Spa Hotel as well as a wide variety of commercial and residential projects in Phoenix, Palo Alto, and Havana.

As early as 1954, William Cody partnered with Henry Hester to form Cody & Hester, Architects (on some drawings this is displayed as Cody and Hester, AIA Architects). Though by 1957 the pair no longer advertised joint services, according to Ronald K. Davis, William F. Cody worked in partnership with Henry Hester as late as 1960. During the summer of 1958, Davis recalled working in Cody's Palm Springs office as a draftsman.

William Cody’s archive is housed at the Robert E. Kennedy Library at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
